Module 5 — Long-Term Outcomes · Episode 18
Why feeding is hard
Feeding is one of the more common long-term challenges after CDH. Long periods on breathing support, time without feeding by mouth, reflux, and simple fatigue can make it harder for babies to learn to eat. Some develop an aversion to feeding by mouth.
How it is supported
Care often involves feeding therapists and dietitians. Some babies need tube feeding (through the nose or, longer term, through the stomach) for a period while oral feeding develops. Many children outgrow these needs with time and support.
What helps families
Patience and a consistent team matter. Feeding progress can be slow and non-linear, and steady support tends to win out.
