Lungs keep developing

The lungs continue to grow and develop through childhood, which is part of why many children with CDH improve over time even when early lung function was limited.

What follow-up covers

CDH survivors are often followed by a multidisciplinary clinic that watches several areas: lung health (including reactive airways and, in some, ongoing pulmonary hypertension), growth and nutrition, reflux, the surgical repair (especially after a patch), development and learning, hearing, and the chest wall and spine.

Why structured follow-up matters

Structured follow-up catches issues early, when they are easier to manage, and supports development. The intensity of follow-up usually reflects how severe the CDH was.
