FETO is a real option that can help carefully selected babies, but it carries meaningful tradeoffs.

The main risk: preterm birth

The most important risk is delivering early, including early breaking of the water (premature rupture of membranes). Because being born too early carries its own serious problems, preterm birth can offset some of the lung-growth benefit. This is the central tradeoff.

Other considerations

There are procedural risks with both balloon placement and removal, and the need to stay near the fetal center so the balloon can be removed at the right time. In rare situations, removal must happen urgently.

What the evidence shows

In severe CDH, clinical trials have associated FETO with improved survival compared with expectant management. In moderate CDH, that survival benefit has not been clearly demonstrated. Your team can explain how these findings apply to your baby.

The honest summary

FETO can help in severe CDH, but it is not a guarantee and not a cure. The right answer depends on your baby’s measurements, your values, and a careful discussion with a fetal care team.
