Common complications during recovery

Not every baby has these, but knowing the possibilities can make them less alarming if they arise.

Around the lungs and chest

• Ongoing pulmonary hypertension, which may need continued medicine.
• Fluid around the lungs, including a milky fluid called a chylothorax, which sometimes follows surgery and is managed with diet changes or drainage.

Around the surgery

• Hernia recurrence, more common after patch repairs, which is why follow-up imaging is done over time.
• Bowel issues, such as obstruction from scar tissue (adhesions), which can occur after any abdominal surgery.

Feeding and growth

• Feeding difficulty and reflux, common enough that they have their own episodes in Module 5.

The point

Complications are managed as part of expected care, not as evidence that something has gone wrong. Your team will tell you what to watch for at home and when to call.
